Planning Priorities - Victoria BC Canada

Sue Hiscocks - Victoria - May 26, 2010 - The real key to successful planning is setting priorities. I believe that a sustainable future for Victoria must include the following priorities:
1 - Green sewage solutions 2 - Regional light rapid transit 3 - Low impact community networks that include cycle paths, walking trails 4 - Distributed clean alternative energy networks that encourage the use of homeowner generated wind and solar power 5 - More low tech environmentally friendly methods of recycling and composting 6 - What we really need is a regional authority that can enable the integration of solutions beyond city limits Something like the CRD should be a political body that makes decisions on plans that are of a regional interest (i.e.; light rapid transit). Perhaps this could be accomplished by having a representative from each community sitting on the regional body. 7 - One of the biggest things that needs to happen is to have a change in local zoning that will allow the solutions to proceed. This is a critical event that costs no money but is necessary for change to proceed. 8 - Incentives and budget should focus on the above priorities. 9 - Community priorities should trump business interests. 10 - Finally, low cost housing and guaranteed pensions for low income earners.

Food not lawns
- Resistance is fertile and alive at UVic… keep updated and informed!
March 31st: students, faculty and community members converged on the remains of last week’s garden and rebuilt it! There was music, speakers, free food, and everyone was invited to participate. Hundreds more people came out for the event, and the new garden is even bigger and more fertile than last time! At 7pm there will be a potluck dinner and discussion–everyone is welcome! If you haven’t participated before, or you want to learn more, this is a great opportunity to get involved. Come join the fun! Come to the space (UVic, in front of MacPherson Library) and join Resistance is Fertile in discussing the problems and challenges we face in terms of food security, politics, bureaucracy, colonialism, and the way we relate to the places where we live and work. Bring your kids, your families, your friends and your communities! If you can: bring food, bowls, cups and plates. Resistance is fertile!

Friday: Epic court case concludes, Bear Mtn in bankruptcy protection -Zoe Blunt Skirt Mountain developers. - the developers discovered Thursday that their partners in the interchange, Len Barrie and Bear Mountain Master Partnership, have gone into court-ordered creditor protection. Worse, they had to hear it from me, because I got the call just as we all left the courtroom, and I immediately announced the news to everyone. We note it's exactly two years since we launched the Boycott Bare Mountain campaign, and one year since the creation of the WTF Langford? blog. Did we predict this, or what?

Court update: VIC FAN vs. Langford continues Thurs-Friday
- Zoe Blunt
Lawyers for Forest Action Network concluded their arguments today (Wed) in BC Supreme Court. Now the lawyers for the city of Langford and the developers are having their turn, and our lawyers will respond again on Friday. We watched the videos of the two public hearings in court, and it seems like Madam Justice Fenlon has a good sense of the players, their tactics, and what is at stake.

We won the first round against Langford at the hearing to overturn the South Skirt Mountain bylaw today. Lawyers for the landowners and the city tried every possible way to discredit the petitioners - the Vancouver Island Community Forest Action Network and me. But our lawyers Irene Faulkner and Robin Gage beat back their weasel tactics and the judge agreed with us, so we advance to Round Two tomorrow,

No Island Light Rail?
The Times Colonist reports today that developer Ken Mariash is selling off he Bayview Project. This is the old rail yard for our dilapidated E&N Island Rail system. It is the ideal location for a light rail station complex. Once it gets developed with high rises though, the concept of an island light rail will become distant wishful thinking. Now is the time to trade that dumb bridge idea that will equal more car traffic, for a nice new rapid rail system.
